Bandana Splits Music Video

Last Monday Stephanie Testa DPed on the set of The Bandana Splits music video for their upcoming single. It was a marathon video shoot, from 3pm to 6am!

The location couldn't have been any better, taking place at the now famed Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain. Now that we finally have something in common with James Franco, I can die a happy woman.

To get the perfect low light look, Stephanie did a ton of research beforehand to select the absolute best lenses for the shoot. We knew that we'd be using a mixture of available lighting, string lights and small spots. The lenses she ended up using were the Canon 14mm f/2.8 (widest rectilinear lens out there), 20mm f/2.8 (our new lens!), 50mm f/1.2, 85mm f/1.2, and 135mm f/2.0. To top it off, she shot many of the shots using a Glidecam track, so the footage really has a great subtle smooth movement.

But before we delay any longer, we want to give a shout out to our friend Bob Coen at Transformers Films (just downstairs!) for getting us in touch with Thomas "Tim" Harris, inventor of the "Hand Held Remote Camera Positioner" - think steadicam meets crane. Harris' device is currently in patent pending, and we're really lucky to say the Bandana Splits music video shoot last week was its debut on a full set! Here's a quick demo video of the crane in action:
So huge thanks to Tim for operating his crane into the wee hours of the morning, and an additional thanks goes to Bob for letting us borrow his follow focus and rig!

So, with production wrapped up, we're currently in post with the video - but we'll be posting a copy of the finished video as soon as it's done!

There's been a lot of talk recently about Google's announcement that Chrome would no longer be supporting H.264 as a web video codec, making room for WebM, their own open source, royalty free codec called VP8. Many are unhappy with this news, since it will make it initially more difficult to publish a video on the web that is viewable in any browser on any computer. Many browsers are already supporting VP8, and others using Safari and IE will have to install plugins for the content to be available. There is speculation that web video publishers may turn back to Flash in the interim while VP8 support becomes more universal. But Flash is clunky on mobile devices, and there's been a big push for HTML5.

Aside from compatibility issues, we are also concerned about quality. So, I decided to load VP8 on our computers, and check it out. Here are the results of my preliminary test, using comparable settings in both codecs.

H.264, 1000kbps, Multi-Pass, 1.7MB

VP8, 1000kbps, 2-Pass, 3.1MB

The differences are extremely slight. It looks like VP8's color is a little richer, with slightly fewer compression artifacts, but really it's nothing drastic. VP8 is almost twice as large at H.264, which was surprising.

"In bright daylight, I can see further than in twilight. Why? For the same reason as in photography: Imagine you have a camera that's focused on 1 meter, but with broken focus. In bright daylight, you may be able to use f/16 aperture, which means that you can see beyond 1 meter (due to the increased depth of field). In lower light, you have to use a larger aperture (say, f/2.8), which gives you a lower depth of field, and you may only be able to photograph things that are 1 meter away. In bright light, your pupils contract, and in low light, the opposite happens."

How Network Cables Will Replace HDMI

Recently, a slew of television manufacturers announced the HDBaseT connection, an ethernet based cable that will provide "power, video/audio, internet and control signals" to televisions sets and replace the current HDMI connection. With the increasing potential of 3D video and 4k Resolution (a more demanding resolution with a frame size of 4096×3072 versus HD at 1920x1080), the new connection will bring the latest technology home, so to speak, making it possible to transfer audio/video data along with the capability of internet connectivity in the same cable. Our film, Bounce Back, was selected to screen again this past weekend at the Best of New York Screening for the 48 Hour Film Project.

The films were all great this year, and team Panic Pants (aka One Glass) walked away with three awards on Friday: an Audience Award, Best Use of Prop, and Best Art Direction!

Also, did I mention that our team name was briefly mentioned in the New York Times? Just scan the 4th paragraph for "hip, ironic names" and you'll see us listed. Hmm. Hip. That's ironic.

2010 NYC 48 Hour Film Project

This year, from June 4th-6th, the 48 Hour Film Project came once again to New York. And for the 5th time, we signed up our team for the restless weekend of film making.

The elements this year for everyone were:

Required character: Ellie or Ethan St. John, President of ______

Required prop: a tennis ball

Line of dialogue: "Are you sure?"

Each team was randomly assigned a different genre; One Glass Video (aka team Panic Pants) was given the genre of Dark Comedy. What we came up with? The former president of a tennis ball company searches for love in a post apocalyptic world.

We're developing a short video series of bar "tips" written by comedian Kendra Cunningham. Recently, we shot the first installment of the series with the Canon 7D. I'm happy with the way the footage looks, though I'm a little disappointed that the 7D overheats so quickly. The lights heated things up a bit, but I'm guessing the space was no warmer than 75 degrees (within Canon's suggested temperate range). We only had an hour to get the shots we needed, so the camera was on and going for most of it. Keeping the LCD dim/off or going to an external monitor seems to help, but I hope they figure this issue out for future generations of DSLR's. I've read a lot of other comments about this issue on various forums, and some have even suggested shooting with the camera on an ice pack.

online video "explodes", Hulu has record-breaking month

Not that this is a surprise to anyone at One Glass, but the online video venue has "exploded." Or is currently exploding. Either way, videos online are getting their fair share of viewers. Some quick stats that might be of interest:

- nearly 178 million U.S. Internet users watched 33.2 billion videos in December

- 86.5% of total U.S. Internet users watched online videos

- 134 million people watched more than 13 billion YouTube videos

- Hulu had more than 1 billion videos viewed

What also should be noted here is that December was also a record setting month for Hulu, marking huge growth for the group. This is great news for not just content developers for online video, but also for online advertisers.

Panasonic's new 3D Video Camera

At CES 2010, Panasonic slated the release of its professional and accessible 3D video camera for Fall 2010. Before this camera, in order to achieve the illusion of depth, 3D filmmakers would place two separate cameras 6.5cm apart (the approximate distance between the human eyes). Adjustments to the cameras have to be infinitely precise, and are usually controlled by an external computer or video controller. The rig is unwieldily, expensive to set up, and a challenge in post production. However, the new lightweight Panasonic P2 HD 3D camera shoots with dual side-by-side lenses that can be manipulated using the camera's own controls, and will allow for a far simpler post workflow. Although, it's not exactly at consumer prices yet; the suggested retail price is $21,000, and it's strictly made-to-order.

There is much debate on whether or not the 3D trend in Hollywood right now is here to stay. The 3D technology currently exists for home televisions sets, and earlier this month it was announced that there will even be an exclusively 3D channel (brought to us by Discovery, iMax and Sony). I wonder, will this technology soon extend to other avenues of video production, such as web? The fact that viewers need to wear special 3D glasses may just keep the technology in the gimmick realm, but it's definitely something worth watching.

3D Television sets were a big buzz at CES 2009, and now at CES 2010, some companies released their work to get rid of those pesky glasses with autostereoscopic technology.

Infrared Photography + Canon 7D HD Video?

So we've acquired our first Canon 7D and have been testing it around the house. While I've read a a couple gripes about the Canon 7D (the 1.6 crop, having "too many" megapixels) I can confidently say that we're overall impressed and happy with the purchase. The camera gives us the ability to get a film-quality HD look but at a fraction of the traditional costs since the 7D is an SLR camera. Furthermore, the large light chip allows us to shoot in low lighting situations that originally, with our old Canon A-1, would have required the use of many high powered production lights.

All of these advantages - a higher receptiveness to light, less expensive lenses, and the overall mobility of the camera - are pushing me to think of more ways to shoot video, especially in ways that were not possible (with our budget) to us before.

The first experiment that I will be trying out is exploring the video results when using infrared filters. For a long time, thanks to being the sibling of a photographer, I've been quite aware of the effects of IR filters on still photography. What you get is a almost other-worldly image of brightly lit foliage and against dark skies. And while I've seen similar effects in larger budget movies, I'm itching to find out how easy it would be to create the same effect with our new Canon 7D, an inexpensive filter, and minimal post color-correction - and of course, I'm hoping these midday videos will not just look like inexpensive night vision goggles. Any great post person knows you can achieve amazing color effects solely in post, but at the same time, would the look be more "authentic" if our raw footage already contained this information? And again, while I know anything is possible in post, I'm looking to create this look with minimal-to-no post work involved.

There is a big issue that I'm planning to arise: my shutter speed.

First, many digital camera makers build in a filter that reduces the amount of IR light that can be recorded. I'm guessing this somehow enhances the visual field of light (but again, I'm no camera maker, that's just a guess). Regardless, with this built in IR blocker in most digital cameras the amount of IR light is significantly reduced. I've read that for a couple hundred dollars one can get the IR blocking removed, but I'm not about to tinker with our new toy. Also, this anti-IR effect varies from camera to camera, and I have no idea if this would even be necessary for our Canon 7D. Anyway, back the my main point: keeping in mind that most of the IR light will be blocked by a [very likely] built in feature of the camera combined with the fact that the IR filter will block out other light wavelengths, we're basically working with a tiny amount of light, even on a bright sunny day. With still photography, this isn't a huge issue, because one can lower the shutter speed, and as long as the subject isn't moving, you can get a great shot. But with video, we're very much limited to how slow our shutter speed can go. But again, this is an experiment, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll get something great!

Here's a simple video I found on Youtube where it looks like someone is testing our a homemade IR video setup. This person was able to work with the lowered amount of light, so it's definitely possible. And while the image quality is pretty low, but the color effect is still pretty cool.

Flexible Screens are Finally Here

If you haven't heard yet, flexible plastic screens are finally here! I'm using the word "finally" here loosely, as the technology has been around for a while now (ie Entertainment Weekly's video ad), but it sounds like they're finding their way into mainstream consumer items as well.

The new QUE e-reader, developed by Plastic Logic, is one such consumer item that takes direct aim at the Kindle. The new e-reader uses polymer technologies to create a screen that is plastic, flexible and NOT fragile. The reader of course, comes with a hefty price, but I'm sure that as time continues the price point will eventually descend to earth for the rest of us.

The screen that the QUE uses is black and white, just like the Kindle, but I did some poking around, and it looks like color plastic screens are being developed by Sony, so I'm sure/hoping it won't be longer before there are devices with flexible full color screens on the market.

There's also the Readius, which has a roll-up screen. The video below shows an older generation of the Readius; the current model on the market (released in 2009) has a fold up screen rather than one that is pulled out. Again, the device is used primarily as an e-reader (and also has a hefty price tag), but I'm really curious about the possibilities for video as screens become more and more convenient to carry (and fold up!).

I have been trying to find someone with a copy of Entertainment Weekly from mid September. Trust me, this has nothing to do with this merits of the magazine itself -- but there's a little glimpse of some exciting new video technology within. For this issue only, CBS has supplied a thin insert that plays a video with audio right on the page. It's an advertisement, of course, but wow. Crazy. Only magazine subscribers got the insert, so I've had no luck at news stands. Has anyone seen it in person?

A while back, our friend Matt told us about an online project called Star Wars: Uncut. It asks the people of the internet to recreate 15 second scenes from Star Wars, with whatever creative direction they see fit. The ultimate goal is to string together all the scenes to recreate the whole movie. I finally got the chance to check it out, and it's awesome! Some people re-enacted it with their own actors, or friends, or legos, or cats, or animation, etc. Some people literally translated the scenes shot by shot, and others took funny creative liberties. Definitely worth checking out, and participating.

Finland just passed a law making access to broadband a legal right for Finnish citizens. (In France, access to the internet is a human right, but this is the first country to make it a legal right). Starting in July 2010, residents of Finland will be guaranteed at least 1mbs internet access, with plans to increase this to 100mbs by 2015. In a world where access to the web is increasingly essential for applying for employment, paying bills, and accessing world news -- this is a wonderful thing.

Check out Qik.. It's a video sharing site, that allows users to upload video LIVE from a mobile phone from anywhere in the world. Theoretically, it uploads and streams the video as you are recording it. I tried it out last night, and there was a couple second delay, but still pretty cool. It's basically a one click record+upload, so there's a whole lot of wobbily videos of nothing on the site. I see the potential here for more live vlogging and amateur coverage of news events-- but I'm surprised that I couldn't find more coverage of the protests in Iran. I guess it's only available for select phones at this point.

New Media Killed the TV Star

First, this article on the Business Insider makes some pretty obvious predictions about where the Television industry is headed.

"...[E]ventually the cable-satellite-airwave monopoly over TV content in local markets will be circumvented by simple, global Internet distribution. You won't have 5 channels, or 50 channels, or 500 channels. You'll have millions of channels. You'll be able to watch anything you want, live or taped. You'll be able to watch it wherever you want--TV, computer, mobile device. You won't have to sorry about "slinging" video content around or programming your DVR. You'll just plug a pipe (Internet) into a box (device) and watch. This is where the future is going."

For many, this future is practically here. A combination of Hulu and Streaming Netflix has already rendered my TV useless. But, I've been really wary about Time Warner's pay-per-use shenanigans. Using the internet for streaming video content could sadly turn out to be far more expensive than Cable TV.

Yesterday it was announced that, believe it or not, Time Warner (along with Comcast) plan to distribute TV shows online.

"The concept, known as "TV Everywhere" or "On-Demand Online" is viewed as a way the pay-TV industry can allow customers to watch TV online through personal computers and mobile devices without enticing them to drop their cable TV subscription."

I'm hoping this is an alternative to their ridiculous metered-use experiment, because it seems absurd to charge customers for a Cable TV subscription, and then charge them AGAIN to transfer the data through their computer.

I feel like the Cable industry is stunting the progress of technology. Streaming web video has been a really powerful propellent in spreading information. It has increased the ease at which consumers can find and share entertainment, and video programs with educational and artistic value. It's changed the way companies market, and it's opened up endless opportunities for new business. And to me, the potential of extending this power to mobile devices is exciting.

- Flash 10 is coming to mobile devices in its beta form in October. This is great news! No more getting that pesky question mark cube (you know what I'm talking about), and video content will be even more portably accessible.

- But in the meantime, there is a website called Tappity designed to help you search and navigate mobile-friendly websites from your phone's browser. Instead of using an ordinary search engine, Tappity yields only results that can be viewed properly on your phone.

- Also, unrelated: It has been rumored (for a while now) that Apple is scheming a tablet computer. It's not really something I'd use for video editing, but it's still kinda cool.

A while a go I stumbled upon a site that I thought took web video to a level we've never seen before. On KickLight.com, users can create and synchronize a mini-web page or application to run in a box below a video during playback. The site is now powered by Youtube, so you have to upload a video to Youtube, and then give it a "kick." In the "kicklight" box, you can include facts about the video you are watching, images, clickable links, relevant rss feeds-- anything that you could build into a website, but as something that is timed and tied to the video.

The site doesn't seem to have gotten a lot of press yet, but I think it's an interesting way to make embedded video more effective, by adding interactive content and enhancing the overall viewer experience. Right now, it looks like they're encouraging users to make "Kicklights" out of existing viral videos, so obviously there is potential for entertainment value. But I think there's also an opportunity here for web video marketing campaigns.

This makes the iPhone look like a pile of poop.

Pattie Maes discusses cutting edge technology that will give the next generation of "smart phone" users a so-called "sixth sense." Her device is now cobbled together using an ordinary cell phone, portable projector, and a web cam. The device allows you to interact with the world in ways we've only seen in science fiction. I am particularly excited about how this device could change the way we read newspapers-- by projecting relevant video content right onto the paper itself.

We did it! After negligible amounts of sleep, we emerged from this year's 48 Hour Film Project with excruciating migraines, inexplicable bruises, and our best 48-Hour submission yet!

Our genre this year was Fantasy, and the required elements were "keys," "a professional organizer" and the line of dialog "You're not going to believe what I just heard."

This will be the 4th time One Glass has participated in the annual 48 Hour Film Project in NYC. Last year we won "Best Use of Prop" with our film, STREET JUSTICE. And the year prior, we were in the top 10 films from NYC and San Francisco with TOP SECRET. I'm really excited about our team this year; our submission is going to be our best yet. We're currently scouting for locations in and around Dumbo, Brooklyn. If anyone has any ideas, or if you know someone with a really cool apartment/business in the area, definitely let us know. We'll be shooting this Saturday (May 30th).

We haven't posted anything on here in a while, but that doesn't mean we haven't been busy. Some highlights from the last month...

- Two films that One Glass Productions worked on were screened at MoMa for their Documentary Fortnight in February. Stephanie Testa did the Sound Design for the two Barbara Hammer films, A Horse is Not a Metaphor and The Diving Women of Jeju. Valery Estabrook designed the DVD's for both films as well.

- Also, we are doing some major construction at the office this week. We are putting up walls to make 3 private edit suites. We're pretty much out of commission as far as work because most of our computers are under a giant tarp, but It's going to be great. Here's a picture of the space in progress:

- We both got G1 Google Phones! Now we're never out of touch (unless the battery dies which it does at an alarmingly fast rate when Valery plays Monkey Island 2 at work). We are fully embracing technology with our touch screens, qwerty keyboards, free three-way calling, mobile email, internet access, live radio, sky maps, and barcode scanning abilities. I know many of you already have iPhones and Blackberries, but I assure you, this qualifies as news to us. You should have seen our previously primitive phones! For a while, the most useful method of communicating with them was by throwing them at our friends to get their attention. Then we found the "on" button but things didn't get much better from there.

We've given a name (and a website) to our Under the Bridges benefit. It's FilmArtFunction! Check out the new site, which features more information about the event and the entertainment therein. We are very pleased to be working with such generous artists who are donating their work for the silent auction. Festival Play: We are proud to announce that our music video for Dawn Landes song, "bodyguard" is an official selection of the Coney Island Film Festival! The video was animated and edited by One Glass Productions' Valery Estabrook, and will be screening on Sunday, September 28th at 3pm in Coney Island, so come check it out!

One Glass in the Press: We are also pleased to announce that One Glass Productions' Stephanie Testa was featured in Go Magazine's September, 2008 "Workin' It" issue! The magazine is available for free all over New York City, so go find yourself a copy, or check out the article on the GO Magazine website.

New Event: We are also incredibly pleased to announce a Launch Party / Screening Event for our "Under the Bridges" docu-series. On Thursday, October 23rd, we will be holding the event at New York City's first LEED certified cultural venue, Galapagos Art Space. We will premiere our pilot episode, along with a program of short films shot or set in Brooklyn. There will be food, booze and tons of entertainment. Please, save the date! Details will follow.

Open Studios: Also, we are participating in the Dumbo's Open Studios on September 26th-28th. During the Dumbo Arts Center's Art Under the Bridge Festival, we will open our office doors to visitors. "The Annual Art Under the Bridge Festival is the single largest urban forum for experimental art in the United States, transforming the distinctive waterfront neighborhood into a multi-sensory public art arena. The event involves the participation of approximately 1,500 artists from all disciplines of visual art and attracts over 150,000 visitors to the neighborhood of Dumbo each year." During the festival, we will have monitors exhibiting our work, and we will be available to tell you all about our recent projects. We are holding a reception hour for friends, colleagues and visitors on Saturday, September 27th at 6pm. I'll keep you posted on further details.

I'm really excited to announce the launch of our Under the Bridges website. Valery and I have been working ridiculously hard creating the first-ever television docu-series about DUMBO, NYC.

"Under the Bridges" profiles area artists and creative businesses who exceed expectations for environmentally sustainable practices and community involvement. The goal is to increase awareness of outstanding individuals and businesses within the DUMBO community, while also emphasizing the importance of social responsibility in urban settings-- all in the form of entertainment.

In October, we will be releasing the pilot episode of "Under the Bridges" to the world in a screening celebration. The event will also show the work of local filmmakers, followed by a catered reception with live music. We are seeking volunteers, film submissions, musicians and non-monetary tax-deductible donations to make this event possible (details available on the Under the Bridges website).

One Glass competes in the NYC 48 Hour FIlm Project!

This past weekend, One Glass Productions participated in the 48 Hour Film Project. If you aren't familiar with the competition, every year about 60 teams from New York City are asked to make short films within a period of 48 hours. All creative elements, including but not limited to, writing, acting, shooting, and editing, must be completed within 48 hours. To make things interesting, teams must incorporate an assigned prop, a character, a line of dialog, and a genre into their films, all of which are announced at the start of the 48 hour time period.

This year, One Glass received: a string instrument (prop), Thomas Ellison, former attorney (character), "I canceled my plans for this./?" (line), and Comedy (genre). We had two great comedy writers, Laura Hudson and Tim Moran, a cast of talented actors, including singer/actress Saycon Sengbloh, and D.P., Benjamin Relf. The result... a story about a disbarred old-fashioned "singing lawyer" who finds an unlikely friendship with a mysterious woman, and together they sing "justice" on the streets of New York City. Now, you can watch the film online and learn that "you don't have to be a lawyer to lay down the law."

I just heard today that our friends over at drop.io moved their offices to DUMBO, right down the street from us, actually. If you haven't checked it out yet, it's a great site for sharing files. Drop.io enables you to create simple private exchange points called "drops." The service has no email signup and no accounts. And the best part is, each drop is private, and only as accessible as you choose to make it.

This weekend, One Glass Productions is starting production on the Dumbo TV show (yet to be named so feel free to throw some ideas our way if you're feeling clever).

Anyway, on Friday, we're shooting first at Prague Kolektiv, a really awesome design/furniture showroom. Since One Glass moved to Dumbo, we have been coveting some of the pieces there, so we're excited to get a closer look.

And then we're shooting at a cool concept record store called Halcyon that has a unique outside-in design, and is dedicated to underground music, art and fashion. Worth a visit, but watch your step. The floor is a mixture of faux-grass and pools of loose river rocks.

On Saturday, we're shooting at a gallery-type space called Spring where all the art is "functional" and for sale. They also have one of the coolest doors in Dumbo, if you've ever seen it. (The silhouettes are transparent, in case you can't tell from the picture.)

Although this first shoot is mainly retail establishments, we are also in conversation with some individual artists. We're always looking to hear about new and interesting happenings in Dumbo, so let us know if you have a Dumbo story to share.

I discovered today, in my daily Google search for my little company, that One Glass Productions, is now the FIRST RESULT in Google Search. That is, when the words "one glass" are searched, but actually, without using the quotes (does that make sense?).

You see, before, there were all these lame glass production websites that came up before us, and we were all like, wha? And Google search was all, shyeah. But now, at least for today, we're on top!

We're still settling in, and with all the new space, we have discovered that we have that we have a serious lack of furniture. One Glass works on new Pilot

One Glass Productions has recently been working on the pilot for the yet-to-be-named series about Dhiraj Arora, the founder of Arora Creations, Inc the first-ever USDA-certified Organic Indian Grocery product line in the US market.

The story is one of personal endeavor and hard work. The series is intended to not only highlight the success of Dhiraj Arora, but also to show the urban flavor of his personality amongst all the packets of indian spices.

The holidays are upon us in full force. That means weekly gatherings full of friends, spiced apple cider, and wind-up robot Santas. At least in the One Glass office, it does.

This past weekend Stephanie and I set up our One Glass Christmas tree, which is making the space between our two offices much more cozy. Here's how it all went down: Steph had a cold so we went to the closest tree vendor just two blocks away. The guy didn't sell any tree stands so we realized we were going to have to find one of those before we bought a tree. We went to he CVS down the street, but all they had were giant heavy-duty PVC plastic ones "suitable for any tree up to 8 feet!" The tree we wanted was 4 feet tall... so needless to say that stand was a little much for us. We then went to our trusted local hardware store, which had a smaller, cuter option. Here are some favorite memories...

Dawn Landes' new music video for her song, "Bodyguard" is soon to be released along with the single in the U.S. and Europe. The video was shot, produced, and animated by One Glass Productions' very own mastermind, Valery Estabrook. She crafted the animations using elements from New York City artist, Danica Novgorodoff's Circus Song Book. I'm still in awe of her patience with the cell-by-cell animation process. I'm just saying-- It's a good thing one of us doesn't have A.D.D. Anyway, you can catch a sneak preview of the video on the One Glass website.

In other news, Mary's Little Lamb (directed by One Glass' Stephanie Testa) had its second screening last week. On November 3rd, Brooklyn-based Life As A Lemon Productions sponsored the benefit screening, supporting their Women in Cinema series, and the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade. One Glass joined in their halloween themed celebration, and a grand time was had by all.

We've returned to NYC from San Francisco, and while we did not bring home the "gold" we did manage to bring home a lot of great memories and some new friends. This past weekend, One Glass Productions participated in Visa's 48-Hour Life Takes Invitational. Only 30 Finalists nationwide were selected to compete based on entries for the regular 48-Hour Film Competition in June, 2007. This time around, we were given a required prop (a Visa card), and a required line of dialog ("life takes...") and asked to write, shoot, score and edit a G-Rated 1-3 minute film in one very exhausting weekend.

Our team consisted of just four people. Valery Estabrook, Stephanie Testa, Laura Hudson and Ethan Gould endured two ridiculously hot days of shooting in our Brooklyn neighborhood amidst a cloud of mosquitoes. Valery got 43 bites on one leg alone. Stephanie got two. Many thanks to Laura and Ethan for their superb performances. We couldn't have done it with out them... Well, we could have, but it would have sucked. A lot.

So now we're off to San Francisco for the screening on September 29th. The top 3 films will win prizes, so keep your fingers crossed for One Glass!

One Glass Productions' "Celebration of Short Films" on August 16th was a wild success! The Bowery Poetry Club was completely packed, thanks to our friends and filmmakers.

The only problems occurred before the screening even started. Apparently, Amiri Baraka had an event right before us. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I have anything against good ol' Amiri, but his crowd was clearly unfamiliar with the concept of "leaving." Our event had to start 20 minutes late, causing much confusion at the door. What-ever, Mister Amiri Baraka. One Glass packed the house despite it all.

We screened two of our own films: A music video for Dawn Landes' song Bodyguard directed by Valery Estabrook, and Stephanie Testa's Mary's Little Lamb- a dark comedy based on a classic Roald Dahl story in which a woman finds herself in a sticky situation with a giant frozen leg of lamb.

In addition, we selected and screened the following films:

Questicus Horrificus is a winner!

One Glass Productions now proudly announces that our NYC 48-Hour film project entry, "Questicus Horrificus" was selected to advance into a national level of competition: Visa's "Life Takes" Invitational! We will have to make another video, and then we're being flown out to San Francisco (free!) for the screening in late September. We're both very excited. Thanks to everyone who helped out! Ethan Gould, Sonia Maksimovich, Andrew Breton, Matt Schoch, Chris Kelly, Don Badaczewksi and Mariclare Lawson: We couldn't have done it without you!

If you are unfamiliar with the 48-Hour competition, we were given a genre, character, prop, a line of dialog and asked to create a film within 48 hours. We received: Horror, a writer named Tetley Fairfax, Conference Badge and "If you must know, my father told me."

Lamb to the Slaughter

This past weekend One Glass shot the first scenes for the new short film Lamb to the Slaughter. The set was created by Stephanie Testa and myself, with lighting design by Danny Weiss. Chris Kelly plays Mary Houseman, the disgruntled housewife, with Andrew Breton as her soon to be murdered husband.

The shoot went pretty smoothly, with no problems at all from our camera. Not only that, but the digitized material looks great - thanks HD! Steph has already edited a rough cut and the sound and lighting all turned out perfectly. I'd also like to extend a big thanks to Chris, who, even on just a couple hours of sleep, was able to churn out a great performance.

Next week we'll be shooting the actual killing scene, with the real star of the film - the 10lb leg of lamb sitting in our freezer.

New dawn Landes Music Video

This Thursday, One Glass was on the set with singer-songwriter, musician, and around-nice-person dawn Landes, shooting her new music video "Bodyguard." We can't release the details just yet, but be assured that the music video is going to be awesome and hot. Speaking of things awesome and hot, it was awesomely hot on thursday and we had dawn and her posse wear some awesomely unbreathable jumpsuits under some really hot lights.

Anyway, we showed up Thursday morning in the pleasant neighborhood of Dumbo in Brooklyn. dawn has a great space there, which by the way, is actually a recording studio as well, so all of you musicians out there, take note.

Did I mention that we made the set? Yeah, that didn't exist before us. Well, the room, existed, but the green screen and the lights were not there. Anyway, I don't want to go too much on a tangent. We've got things to do - we're planning on animating the video. The animations are going to incorporate elements from Danica Norgodoff's illustrated book, The Circus Song Book. Her drawings are amazing. Also, this weekend we're shooting a short film based on Roald Dahl's short story Lamb to the Slaughter. It's also going to be awesome and hot. Let's just say this: murder, deceit, and giant club-shaped leg of lamb.

One Glass is having a party!

For those of you who are just familiarizing yourselves with us, One Glass Productions consists basically of Stephanie Testa and myself, Valery Estabrook. We live and work in New York City, making all things big and small that relate to video, film, and the editing thereof. After years of carpal-tunnel inducing freelance work, we finally decided to join forces and to become what some may call a "creative powerhouse." Others may call us a "the conjoined-twin version of video editor-producers." And still others, simply "hey, you two." But nicknames aside, we are ready to announce ourselves to the world - and what better way to make announce this important news than by having a party!

That's right. And you're invited. On August 16th, 2007, at the Bowery Poetry Club, One Glass will be sponsoring a huge, amazing, laugh-your-ass-off-yet-still-feel-warm-and-gooey-inside kick-off party to celebrate the melding of our creative and technical minds. We will be screening our latest work, along with the short films of our friends, and a few others that we have deemed worthy.

The party will start at 9pm with an OPEN BAR from 9-10pm. Space is limited, so get there early. Admission is $10 at the door but if you RSVP to info@oneglass.org, you'll receive a special price of just $7. The screening will start promptly at 10pm, with plenty of time afterwards to meet and greet everyone. Be sure to stop by, see some great short films, meet some awesome video editors, and of course, schmooze your heart out. We guarantee it'll be the best night of your life.
